Walk into any health food store scroll through Instagram for more than thirty seconds or open almost any wellness podcast and you will find someone talking about mushroom gummies. Lion’s mane for focus. Reishi for sleep. Chaga for immunity. Cordyceps for energy. The market for functional mushrooms is on track to exceed 13 billion dollars in 2026 alone.
That is a lot of money for something that depending on what you buy might be little more than expensive fruit flavored sugar.
Let’s get into it
First: The Mushrooms Themselves Are Genuinely Interesting
Before discussing mushroom gummies or supplements it’s worth recognizing that the mushrooms themselves are the subject of legitimate scientific research. These are not simply social media wellness trends. Many medicinal mushrooms have been used for centuries in traditional medicine particularly in East Asia and modern researchers are investigating whether some of these traditional uses have measurable biological effects.
While several medicinal mushrooms show promising potential it’s important to distinguish between laboratory findings, animal studies and well designed human clinical trials. Much of the strongest evidence is still preliminary and larger long term human studies are needed before firm health claims can be made.
Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus)

Lion’s mane is one of the most extensively studied medicinal mushrooms for brain health. It contains two major groups of bioactive compounds: hericenones primarily found in the fruiting body( The fruiting body is the visible, above ground structure)and erinacines primarily found in the mycelium (Mycelium is root network that’s underground). In laboratory and animal studies these compounds have been shown to stimulate the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) or influence NGF related pathways. NGF is a protein that plays an essential role in the growth, maintenance and survival of neurons.
However scientists have not yet demonstrated that lion’s mane increases NGF levels in the human brain as measuring this directly is extremely difficult.
Human research is encouraging but still limited. Several randomized placebo controlled studies have reported modest improvements in certain aspects of cognitive function such as processing speed, memory and mental performance after several weeks of supplementation. Other small clinical studies have found reductions in self reported stress and anxiety. A 2025 narrative review concluded that lion’s mane shows promising neuroprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties while emphasizing that larger and longer term clinical trials are still needed before definitive conclusions can be drawn.
Overall lion’s mane is one of the most promising medicinal mushrooms for cognitive health but the evidence should still be considered emerging rather than conclusive.
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
Reishi has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years and is sometimes referred to as the “mushroom of immortality.” Modern research has focused largely on its beta glucans complex (carbohydrates) that can interact with the immune system.
Human studies suggest that reishi beta glucans can influence immune cell activity and may improve certain immune markers. Some research has also found modest improvements in fatigue, sleep quality and overall well being in specific populations.
However changes in immune markers do not necessarily translate into improved health outcomes and current evidence does not support claims that Reishi can prevent disease or cure illnesses. Overall Reishi appears promising for immune support but more high quality clinical research is required.
Cordyceps

Cordyceps particularly Cordyceps militaris has been studied for its potential effects on exercise performance, energy metabolism and immune function.
Several randomized controlled trials have reported modest improvements in immune cell activity and reductions in some inflammatory markers. Research has also investigated whether cordyceps can improve aerobic capacity and oxygen utilization particularly in older adults or recreationally active individuals.
The results however are mixed. Some studies report small improvements in exercise performance while others find little or no benefit. Current evidence suggests cordyceps may offer modest physiological benefits in some people but it is not a proven performance enhancing supplement.
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus)

Chaga has a long history of traditional use in Northern Europe and Russia. It is rich in antioxidant compounds particularly polyphenols and melanins making it one of the most antioxidant rich medicinal mushrooms studied.
Laboratory studies have shown that chaga extracts can reduce oxidative stress inhibit the growth of certain cancer cells in cell cultures and improve blood sugar regulation in animal models.
The important limitation is that most of this evidence comes from laboratory and animal research rather than human clinical trials. At present there is insufficient high quality evidence to conclude that these benefits occur in humans.
The Bottom Line
The scientific interest in medicinal mushrooms is genuine and several species including lion’s mane, reishi, cordyceps and chaga show promising biological activity. However the strength of evidence varies considerably.
Most positive findings come from laboratory experiments, animal studies or relatively small human clinical trials. While early human research is encouraging particularly for lion’s mane and to a lesser extent reishi and cordyceps the current evidence is not yet strong enough to support many of the bold health claims often used in supplement marketing.
Medicinal mushrooms should therefore be viewed as promising areas of nutritional and medical research rather than proven treatments. As more large well controlled human studies are completed our understanding of their true health benefits will continue to improve
